Mary Schroeder

British author born in 1903. Attended Cambridge although spent a lot of her life in the North East of England, including Yorkshire and Northumberland. As well as one story which features a horse (albeit an imaginary one!) she wrote a few other children's books and some educational history books for younger readers.

Easy to find in the paperback edition and usually low cost. The first edition is a little harder to get hold of. The American editions are also fairly easy to track down in the USA.
